Warning to residents after bogus caller strikes in St Andrews

A 78-year-old man was contacted at his home on yesterday (Tuesday) and asked to transfer money from his bank account using a Moneygram payment so he could be reimbursed after an alleged bank error.

The caller claimed to be an employee of the bank, however, the man became suspicious and refused to transfer any money before reporting the matter to police.

Officers are now urging others to be vigilant for similar scams and inform the police should they also be contacted.

Sergeant Pat Turner from St Andrews Police Station said: “This is an obvious scam which thankfully the recipient saw through and informed the police.

“I would ask that everyone be vigilant and never give out any personal details over the phone as this could allow the fraudsters to use this information to appear more genuine.

“This attempt was directed at an elderly resident of the town and it is possible that other people have been targeted in similar way. If you think a friend or family member may be a potential victim then please discuss the issue with them to raise their awareness and prevent any loss.

“Inquiries are continuing trace this bogus caller and anyone with information that may be helpful to the police is asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
