Warning to residents after series of deliberate fires in Glenrothes

Fire crews were called to attend four deliberate fires involving bins and rubbish in the Warout Woods area during the weekend and a warning has been issued to residents calling on those living in the area to make safe wheelie bins where ever possible.

Glenrothes Station manager Graham Arnott said: “If you live in this area please make sure your wheelie bins are secure and are left a safe distance from your home.”

And he has appealed in particular to young people to consider the consequences of deliberately setting a fire.

“As we move towards the Easter holidays, and typically see an increase in deliberate fires, we would urge parents to ensure that their children know about and understand the potentially tragic consequences deliberate fires can have, as well as the impact for responding emergency services,” he added.

“We shall continue to work with our Police Scotland colleagues to ensure each incident is fully investigated, as much intelligence is gathered and that perpetrators are caught.

Community Sergeant Kenny Greig said: “Officers are now conducting local enquiries to identify those responsible for this crime and anyone with information that can assist with these investigations is asked to come forward.

“These fires had the potential to put the public, including those responsible, in serious danger and I would remind those responsible that what may seem a prank is a serious criminal offence and if caught you will be charged and reported.

“Anyone who remembers seeing anything suspicious outside either premises over the weekend is asked to contact police immediately, anonymously if they wish or by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
