Met Office extends amber weather warning to cover Fife as residents and businesses warned of flood risk

According to the Met Office website, the severe weather warning will bring flooding and disruption to travel and will be in place from 6pm on Saturday until 6am on Sunday.

Residents in Fife can expect homes and businesses to be affected by flooding with a “danger to life” from fast flowing or deep floodwater.

Delays or cancellations on trains and buses are also expected with spray and flooding likely to cause difficult driving conditions. Power cuts are also a possibility.

As it stands, the amber weather warning does not cover Edinburgh but a yellow ‘be aware’ weather warning is in place for the Capital and Lothians.

The amber ‘be prepared’ weather warning also covers Dundee, Angus, parts of Perthshire as well as Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and parts of Moray.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said these regions are set to be hit with up to 70mm of rain with more than 120mm possible on higher ground on Saturday.

It comes after a low-pressure system named Storm Alex moved in from France and clipped the southern edge of Britain on Friday.

Mr Dewhurst said: “It is going to be raining and horrible all day (Saturday)"

"If you have to travel, take extra time on your journey, the roads will be pretty treacherous at times with poor visibility due to the heavy rain."

The Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership has also announced the cancellation of all their drive-through flu clinics in Edinburgh on Saturday due to the weather warnings in place.
