Scotland's weather: Amber and yellow warnings as Scotland to be battered by heavy rain and winds

Both amber and yellow warnings are in force across the country between 6am tomorrow and 6pm on Wednesday.

Amber warnings for rain are due to hit Tayside, and Central Scotland, along with the South West and the Borders between midday on Tuesday and midday on Wednesday.

It will be accompanied by a number of yellow warnings for wind and rain covering areas across the country.

Travel disruption can be expected, along with potential flooding and damage.

The Met Office said of the amber warnings: “A spell of persistent and often heavy rain will affect much of Scotland during Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Rainfall accumulations of 40 to 60 mm are expected quite widely across the warning area with a few places possibly seeing 80-120 mm in a 24 to 36 hour period, although there still remains some uncertainty in peak totals.

"Drier conditions will arrive from the west during the second half of Wednesday. Strong southerly winds are likely to accompany the rain.”

The forecaster added in relation to the yellow wind warning: “Strong south to south-westerly winds will gust 50-60 mph at times, but there is the potential for gusts of 70 mph for eastern coastal districts of Northern Ireland, the Western Isles and perhaps the Moray coast during the morning.

"Winds will ease across much of Northern Ireland and the north-western half of Scotland during the afternoon.”

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) also looks set to issue flood warnings as some areas see rivers levels rising.

Janine Hensman, SEPA’s Duty Flooding Manager said: "The Met Office has issued an amber warning for rain from 12:00 on Tuesday 23 until 12:00 on Wednesday 24 February for Perth and Kinross, Stirling, East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, Dumfries and Galloway, and the Scottish Borders.

"Following the wet weather experienced over the weekend, river levels remain high but will rise again.

"More heavy rain is forecast on Tuesday which will continue throughout the day and into Wednesday. This is likely to cause significant river flooding impacts in these areas along with surface water flooding affecting properties and significantly disrupting travel and infrastructure.

“We will be issuing regional Flood Alerts and local Flood Warnings throughout today and tomorrow.

"People living and working in affected areas are advised to plan their essential journeys and consider the steps they need to take now to be prepared. You can stay up to date with regional Flood Alerts and local Flood Warnings at sepa.org.uk/floodupdates.

“SEPA is working 24/7 to monitor rainfall and river levels and is in close contact with the Met Office and other partners to review the forecasts, which are combined with local expertise from all regions of Scotland to understand and present the flooding risk. We would encourage the public to remain vigilant around river and surface water flooding.
