In pictures: snow sweeps across Scotland and the north of England

Large parts of Scotland and northern England have been hit by snow yesterday and this morning.

The unpredictable weather has caused major disruption across the country, but that hasn't stopped amateur photographers from getting outdoors and sharing snowy scenes on Twitter and Instagram.

Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh

The Scottish capital received several dustings of snow yesterday. Twitter user Tom Hetherington took this picture of city landmark, Edinburgh Castle.

Glasgow University, Glasgow

Scotland's second city was also on the receiving end of wintry conditions. Glasgow University tweeted this photo of The Gilbert Scott Building.

Headingley Stadium, Leeds

Snow also effected much of the North of England. Headingley Stadium, the home of Yorkshire Cricket wasn't exempt from the conditions.

Sycamore Gap, Northumberland

Rushop Edge, The Peak District

Meanwhile in Derbyshire, one user warned followers of the treacherous conditions, before sharing this stunning image of Rushop Edge.

Back in Scotland, one user took this picture of the Wallace Monument from the battlements of Stirling Castle.

Coniston, North Yorkshire

The Yorkshire Dales also endured difficult conditions. The Coniston Hotel shared this image on Instagram.

The northwest highlands of Scotland were, perhaps unsurprisingly, also on the end of snowy conditions. One Instagram user shared this majestic image of Loch Cluanie.
