The inspiring stories of two Fife College students turning passion into careers

Whether it’s becoming a head chef by 30 or starting a therapy business that helps people feel their best; learning and real-world experience can open doors to exciting careers. Here’s the stories of two students following their dreams at Fife College.
There’s a lot of noise out there about what you should do after school. Go straight to uni - pick something “sensible” – or treat college as a backup plan.
But for students like Kyle and Sarah, the reality is a bit different.
It’s not about doing what people expect - it’s about finding something that feels right, and actually learning something useful along the way.
Kyle: “I’m aiming to be a head chef by 30”
Kyle is studying Advanced Professional Cookery at Fife College’s Dunfermline campus. He’s also working as a chef while he studies - which means he’s constantly learning, both in and out of the classroom.
He says: “I’ve learned how to handle different meats and cuts, and how to cook them properly. It’s been really hands-on.”
Through the course, Kyle was invited to be part of the Chef Ambassadors Programme.
He recently got to serve at Murrayfield Stadium, cooking for the chef board - something he describes as “an amazing experience”.
He’s not just learning skills - he’s building a future he’s genuinely excited about.
“I’d love to be a sous chef by the time I’m 24. Head chef by 30. I’m just trying to learn as much as I can.”

Sarah: “I wanted something different”
Sarah returned to education as an adult to study Complementary Therapies at Fife College.
She wasn’t happy in her previous jobs. The course offered her a fresh start - one that aligned with her values.
“I love helping people, so this course just made sense. It’s been enjoyable from the start.”
There’s a balance of practical and theory work - learning hands-on techniques, as well as studying the human body and how everything connects.
It’s been challenging at times, but also rewarding.
Satah says: “The people I’ve met here, I know I’ll be friends with them for life. The lecturers have been wonderful as well; I honestly can’t praise them enough.”
Her ambition is to eventually be self-employed and run her own therapy business.
College isn’t just a classroom at Fife College
There’s a common misconception that college is all theory and no action; just ticking boxes, reading textbooks, and hours of lectures.
But the reality at Fife College looks very different.
Students like Kyle are learning by doing - prepping, cooking, and serving at real events.
Sarah’s building practical skills in therapies that help people feel better, not just memorising terms from a textbook.
Students across Fife College are learning through practice - whether that’s in kitchens, therapy rooms, workshops, or real workplaces.
