All the president's men come out on top at returning event

Absence may well make the heart grow fonder and golfers in Cupar have certainly shown their affection to a once popular competition.

The TSB, set up in 1980, was once one of the town’s most prominent sporting events - attracting a huge number of entrants.

But over the years in dwindled, until last year the competition, played in a team format made up mainly of groups work colleagues, was cancelled altogether.

Having it missing from the calender jolted the club into action and this year it was re-launched by the under the leadership of an energetic group made up of Kevin Gatherum, Giancarlo Panetta, and Jason Steele.

It was played again over the weekend with the community backing the flagship in numbers.

Some 40 teams teed off from 7am through to nearly 4pm,

The clear winning team on the day was the President’s Four, representing current club president, Joe Manson, who sadly had to be non-playing captain, because of injury.

His team was made up of John Richmond, Irvine Wilson, John McHugh and Norman Macrae and they won the famous TSB trophy with an impressive net score of 132.

In second place, with a score of 134, was the Royal Mail team, made up of John Michie, Sandy Young, Mark Lawson and J Honeyman.

A further stroke behind was the Blake Contractors team of Eck Blake, Bob Williams, Jimmy Hall and D. Goldie.

Best scratch score was returned by team Little and Large (M.Jones, P.Tulloch, A.Hain, and S.Singer) with a score of 135.5.

At the evening prize-giving, assistant match secretary, Giancarlo Panetta told a packed clubhouse the story of the revival of the event and the delight at the organisers at the entry of 40 teams in this year’s TSB.

He thanked everyone for taking part and gave special thanks for their support to stewardess, Heather Sharpe and her team in the clubhouse and to Gary Douglas, the greenkeeper and his helpers for the superb presentation of the course.

Club captain, Iain Barbour, congratulated the group for all their work on this year’s successful TSB.

He also recorded the club’s appreciation for the generous sponsorship. of the event by property experts, Graham and Sibbald.

The captain expressed his delight at the condition of the golf course and had heard claims that the course has some of the best greens in Fife, including St Andrews.

He then invited Les McAndrew, snr, the founder of the event, to present the prizes.

This coming Sunday August 7, sees Cupar Golf Club’s next big event, the Cupar Open.
