Major boxing event coming to the Kingdom

The Alhambra Theatre in Dunfermline is hosting the annual Great Britain Elite Boxing Championships on Friday and Saturday.

The event, hosted by Boxing Scotland, is being held north of the border for the first time in over a decade, and is coming to Fife for the first time in championship’s history.

Taking place over two nights, the tournament will see Scotland’s best amateur boxers compete against their nearest rivals from England and Wales.

It will consist of semi-final bouts on the Friday evening before the winners contest the finals the following evening.

Following on from a successful Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Scotland is looking to continue its development within the sport.

The line-up will include Glasgow 2014 bronze medallist, Reece McFadden, who will be among other prodigious talents such as Aqeel Ahmed, John Docherty and Lee McGregor - all tipped to have a big future in the sport. The GB Elite Championships is a great platform for emerging talent and has previously featured household names such as the current IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and the world’s first female boxing Olympic Champion, Nicola Adams.

Boxing Scotland’s national coach, Mike Keane, is hoping to oversee home nation success at a venue just a short trip along the A92 from his home town of Kirkcaldy.

“We at Boxing Scotland are extremely excited about hosting the Elite Championships for the first time in over a decade and we are fully focused on building on recent successes; and with all the hard work that the team has put into preparation, hopefully it should be a great night for Scottish Boxing,” he said.

“With home advantage we will have a good number of boxers competing in what will be a stern test for our nation’s best up-and-coming boxing prospects against Great Britain’s best.

“There is a good appetite for boxing in Scotland given the previous success of the Commonwealth Games – it should make for a special couple of nights of boxing in Dunfermline.

“We would hope that boxing fans will come along and support the next line of emerging boxing talent.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to see Scotland’s future stars in action across two days of intense competition – and hopefully we’ll see some of our home grown talent crowned champions.”

Both nights run from 7.00 p.m until 11.30 p.m and will cost £20 for entry. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.
