Breakthrough year ends with award nomination

The Drumoig amateur started the year with a bang, winning the top class Australian Amateur Championship.

He went on to prove the win was no fluke, maintaining that form across a host of tournaments, including the European Amateur Team Championship, helping Scotland to a second successive win at the event.

His win Down Under at the beginning of 2016 saw him invited back to Australia recently for the nation’s Open as part of a field including Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott.

Again he proved capable of mixing it with the best on the grandest stages, narrowly missing the cut mark.

All of this persuaded Scottish Golf that Syme was worthy of a place in their shortlist for the 2017 Scottish Golf Awards player of the year.

Winning won’t be easy, with Syme joined by some of Scotland’s most famous golfing names.

Candidates include World No 19 Russell Knox, who clinched his second PGA Tour victory at the Travelers Championship in addition to three other top-10 finishes; Catriona Matthew, who represented Team GB in Rio; seniors star Colin Montgomerie, and Duncan Stewart, who secured a step-up to the European Tour have claimed 10th spot in the Challenge Tour rankings.
