Carol joins Fife Flyers off-ice team

The club has appointed Carol Johnstone as commercial manager.

She takes over from Allan Paul who stood down recently.

Carol, a former Fife Free Press employee, was the first girl to play competitive ice hockey at junior level in Scotland.

She has assisted in the formation of the national team leading on to represent Scotland and Great Britain at national competitions - and in 1996 made the headlines when she stepped in to replaced an injured official in a British National League game involving Fife Flyers.

Her ground-breaking appearance came at Fife Ice Arena when referee Drew Fraser was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured cheek-bone after he was hit in the face by the puck in the fourth minute of the match against Humberside Hawks.

His place was taken by linesman Craig Dryburgh, and Carol stepped in as linesman.

More recently she has worked with Kingdom FM as business development manager.

Carol said “I am very excited to be taking on this new role.

“I am fully aware that my commercial commitment and leadership will ultimately reflect a strong and successful product on the ice.”

Flyers are at home to Nottingham Panthers on Sunday, face-off 6.30 p.m.
