Club swimming meetis superb success

Saturday’s atmosphere was truly charged with a huge buzz, not only from the young athletes themselves but also spectators and supporters who turned out in significant number to enjoy the event.

Local celebrity, television announcer and decorated Paralympian Paul Noble added to the anticipation and excitement of the day with his commentary skills and interaction among the young swimmers.

Paul, who was among the commentators during Channel 4’s recent coverage of the Paralympics in Rio, swam with GASC as a youngster and took part in five Paralympics from 1984 to 2000, winning a medal in every one.

He offered encouragement, guidance and inspiration by allowing the budding stars of the future a try of his medals.

Tremendous effort was made by all competing clubs, producing some remarkable results. Closer to home, GASC celebrated overwhelming success, securing 10 gold medals, 16 silver, 10 bronze, 32 (fourth to eighth place finishes), 14 ‘too fast’ flash times and a staggering 79 personal best times.

Head coach Barry McMillan was immensely proud of his team and commended the effort and sportsmanship of all participants, thanking the nine visiting clubs for their support. The meet aimed to provide a great gala in a friendly but competitive environment for younger swimmers and those with limited gala experience.
