Double defeat for Falkland in league and cup

On a beautiful summer's day at Scroggie Park on Saturday, Falkland faced Arbroath United.

The visitors won the toss and chose to bat first.

Falkland had early successes and had Arbroath on 86 for 4 wickets with half the overs completed.

However, Arbroath managed a comeback and completed their 50 overs with 231 runs.

Calvin Burnett top scoring with 71 not out supported by Elton Willemse with 58.

Ben Strachan returned Falkland’s best bowling figures of 2 for 39 from his 10 overs, followed by Safyaan Sharif with 2 for 46 from 13 overs. Falkland’s reply never really got going and the home side were all out for 79 from 29.2 overs.

Top score was by Ardene Ruhode with 22. Craig Ramsay returned bowling figures of 3 for 24 from 6.2 overs, Elton Willemse 2 for 13 from 8 overs, Brendan Ford 2 for 15 from 8 overs and Calvin Burnett 2 for 26 from 7 overs.

A day later they were were defeated by Carlton in the Scottish Cup, but did so with their heads held high after a creditable batting performance.

Falkland chose to back first and in spite of the early loss of Sharif and Ferguson, reached 177 with fine contributions from Ben Strachan and Grant Doig with Harry Waterson in his first game of the season doing well also and hitting two sixes when the total needed a boost.

When Brock Ditchmen captured an early wicket, hopes were high that an upset might be on the cards, but Scotland Internationalist Fraser Watts took command and with support from Kyle Macpherson and Rory McCann batted Falkland out of the game.
