Fife girl heading to America for footgolf '˜Ryder Cup'

Footgolf has exploded onto the scene over the past few years as a fun activity normally associated with stag dos or a day out with friends.

For those unfamiliar with it, think of a golf course with over sized pin-holes - big enough for a football to fit in.

Those taking part boot their ball around the course and work to the same rules as golf, with par 3, 4 and 5 holes.

It’s all great fun, but for Glenrothes’ girl Teri Newell footgolf is a lot more than just an afternoon larking around in the park.

The sport has developed a more competitive side which Teri is part of.

She’s currently ranked as Scotland’s number one female and is set to head off to the USA in May to compete against the best in the world.

“I have been selected to represent the UK America for the Jansen Cup which is a Ryder Cup equivalent,” said the student PE teacher.

“I got into footgolf after taking part at a summer camp in Ipswich. When I got back to Scotland my boyfriend, Matthew Morgan, who’s rated number six in Scotland, took me across to Edinburgh where I got more involved.”

Teri trains across Scotland and has started her winter preparation before competing in America.

The four-day event will take place May 22-24, 2017 at the Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, California.

She needs to raise funds in order to get there and any businesses or individuals interested in supporting her can get in touch at [email protected].
