Fijians steal the show to claim Kirkcaldy Sevens

Composed entirely of Fijians they brought their own distinctive brand of the game to the 64th competition for the Heggie Cup, beating Watsonians in the final at Beveridge Park.

Also included in the afternoon’s programme were tournaments for Under 18s and Women with Falkirk triumphing in the colts section with a hard earned win against Hamilton and Broughton over-running Kirkcaldy in the women’s final.

Overall it was a disappointing day for the Kirkcaldy senior seven, knocked out in the semi final of the main event by a youthful but highly skilful Watsonians side.

The event, sponsored by legal firm Digby Brown, had began brightly enough for the Blues in the opening tie of the tournament with a thumping 47-5 win over a limp Dunfermline team.

The third side in Pool 1 Perthshire then came up against Kirkcaldy and in the most closely contested game of the afternoon lost out 24-22 with only a conversion separating the teams.

Meanwhile the Dragoons had impressed winning both their pool games, 26-7 against Boroughmuir and 41-7 over a President’s VII.

Also catching the eye in the early stages were Watsonians, running in seven tries against Howe of Fife and six in their tie with Irvine.

A special mention has to go to the Wolverines team, basically a second Kirkcaldy seven entered after the late withdrawal of the Black Watch side.

They competed well against National 2 champions Hamilton before beating Napier University on their second pool match.

This win earned them a place in the Plate tournament for the runners-up in the various pools eventually going down to Boroughmuir. In the Plate final ‘Muir beat Irvine 19-10.

In the first semi-final Kirkcaldy were always behind in the game with Watsonians holding the upper hand.

However, with ninety seconds left the Blues were only two points in arrears and looking capable of snatching a winner.

But when under pressure the Myreside men broke away for a score which sealed their place in the final.

The Dragoons had an easier passage in their semi final, winning 17-0 versus Hamilton.

Prior to the final, the women’s competition ended with Broughton beating Kirkcaldy 50-0 and the Under 18 cup was won by Falkirk who overcame Hamilton 19-12.

The tournament concluded with a splendid final in which the Dragoons exhibited all the skills of their home land, backed up by power and pace which enabled them to beat Watsonians 40-14.
