FIFE Flyers are closing in on a double signing.
The Press understands that the Kirkcaldy club has held advanced talks with both a defenceman and forward from North America and – barring any hitches – signings could be announced within the next week.
Player-coach Todd Dutiaume (pictured), and his assistant Danny Stewart, have been busy contacting players and agents across the globe as they begin the task of rebuilding the Elite League’s bottom club.
“We’ve contacted a lot of agents and held preliminary talks with a lot of guys,” Dutiaume said.
“We’re making sure we do our due diligence by getting three or four references for every guy – and that takes time.
“We want guys who are going to improve on last year’s squad.”
Dutiaume admitted that Flyers fans are unlikely to see a return of the imports who graced Fife Ice Arena last season.
“It looks like being a pretty clean slate with the exception of myself and Danny,” he said.
“You have to remember we finished in last place last season so there has to be changes.
“There’s one or two we would like back, but they have to want to come back here with the attitude that we’re going out to win, and understand that we’d need even more out of them.”
Dutiaume is expecting to re-sign most of last season’s Brits, but he stressed that they will be expected to up their game in what will be their second season at Elite League level.
“There will always be opportunities for the Brits to get plenty ice time, but I told them over the summer that we need more out of them,” he said.
“These guys are going to have to earn their spot and work for it.”
