Flyers set for play-off Sunday showdown

Fife Flyers bring Belfast Giants to town for the second leg of their play-off quarter-final tie to determine which team goes on to the finals weekend in Nottingham.

The first leg in Belfast followed the pattern of results between the clubs all season with the home team triumphing.

Giants won 4-2 to hold the upper hand, but this tie is far from over.

Flyers haven’t lost to Giants on home ice this season, and, in front of a potential full house, they will be hoping that continuedstonight as they bid to make the finals weekend for a third time in six years.

The entire season comes down to 60 minutes of hockey.

It has the makings of a thrilling Sunday showdown.

Flyers did take an early lead in Belfast, with Sebastien Thinel netting the only goal of the opening period.

Giants then seized momentum with quick goals from Steve Saviano and Chris Higgins, and Derrik Walser struck twice before Chase Schaber grabbed a crucial to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Now the stage is set for one final push to make the finals,

Flyers need to win by two goals to tie the aggregate score – or win by three and eliminate Giants.

If the teams are still tied after regulation time then the match goes to ten minutes four-on-four overtime.

If that doesn’t produce a winning goal, it will then be three-on-three hockey for five minutes.

And if the deadlock is still in place, it is down to a best-of-three penalty shoot out, and, if required, sudden death shots.

The rink has witnessed many incredible nights of hockey across the decades – could another one be added to the history books tonight?
