The scoreline would suggest that the young Hibs had been totally overrun but in fact they gave a very good account of themselves against a team with players a year older.

It’s fair to say that they’ll play worse this season and win.

Abernethy took the lead at South Inch, Perth in the seventh minute when slack marking allowed Ben Ragan to net from close range and by the 36th minute, the hosts doubled their lead thanks to Patrick Brown converting Kyle Mitchell’s free kick.

Thornton’s best chance came shortly after when they broke quickly and Max Bain was just out of luck with a shot from distance that just cleared the crossbar.

Patrick Brown put Abernethy out of sight on the hour mark to maintain his side’s 100 per cent start to the season.
