And at the end of the 90 minutes the East Fife support learned their afternoon had got even brighter thanks to Montrose’s defeat of Elgin.

Naysmith said: “I’ve said before that you enjoy the victories for about 10 minutes and then you’re on to the next game, but when you get beaten it seems to last for two or three days.

“But I’m going to enjoy this one tonight.”

The game was tight, particularly in the opening half, with chances at a premium.

However, the Fifers got into their stride in the second 45 before Smith eventually made their pressure count.

Jamie Insall went close in the first half, as did Nathan Austin.

Stirling didn’t put Liam Kelly under too much pressure with East Fife doing most of the pressing.

Naysmith’s men are on an excellent run of form at the moment, the result of which has saw them steamroller their way to the top of the league.

Seven games without defeat is title winning form, but the Bayview gaffer won’t allow his side to get too carried away.

With two difficult home games on the horizon against Queen’s Park and Elgin, Naysmith is taking things one game at a time and ensuring his side is as prepared as they can be for each game.

“Already I’m onto Queen’s Park,” he said.

“I’ll speak to the scout in the next 20 minutes and see what formation they play and Dougie Anderson (Fife assistant) and the scout will be out watching them play Berwick on Tuesday.

“That’s how it is as a manager.”
