When the decision was made to halt the season early, concerns were raised about how clubs could survive with no gate money or other revenue streams coming in.

Some clubs launched crowdfunding pages where supporters could donate online, while others signed up to the ‘donate a ticket’ scheme which allowed fans to give the cash they would normally have handed over at the turnstile.

Despite the on-going uncertainty, fans have been giving what they can, with some clubs recording four figure donations.

Newtongrange Star, Penicuik Athletic, Whitehill Welfare, Dalkeith Thistle and Bonnyrigg Rose were amongst those signing up to be part of the donate a ticket scheme.

At the time of writing Welfare had raised nearly £700 to help towards running costs.

The club said: “We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated to the club over the last few weeks.

“We are blown away by the generosity in these challenging times.”

Newtongrange Star are being further backed by their fans who have been chipping in to sponsor players ahead of the new season starting.

Some are already taken, but plenty remain available.

Due to COVID-19 putting the long running Penicuik Athletic Lottery into an enforced hiatus, the club has created a temporary replacement with the brand new Cuikie Bonus Ball. It costs £5 to pick any number between 1-59.
