Broken wrist striker Stewart is a '˜nappy chappy' after Raith winner

A broken wrist may have prevented Mark Stewart from changing his kid's nappies, but it didn't stop him from scoring the winner against Queen of the South on Saturday.

Stewart has had to leave the baby-changing duties to wife Elaine after snapping his wrist in the 4-2 win against Falkirk, but he did not let it affect his prowess in front of goal as he pounced in the 90th minute to seal a 1-0 win that lifted Rovers above Queens into third.

Stewart, whose son Aaron is five-months-old, told the Press: “I didn’t know at the time, but I broke my wrist at the start of the second half against Falkirk.

“After the game I said to the physio that my wrist was hurting and he thought I’d sprained it, but said to get it checked out if it didn’t get any better.

“It was worse by Sunday night. I was trying to pick up the wee man up at home, but couldn’t, so I went to hospital and they confirmed I’d broken it.

“We’re trying to get an operation booked so I don’t miss any games. It’s sore, but I just need to get on with it.”

Stewart, who wore a protective splint against Queens, had an operation yesterday (Wednesday) to insert a screw into his wrist, placing his appearance in this weekend’s Fife derby in serious doubt.

He had hoped his appointment would coincide with next weekend’s international break. Speaking after the Queens game, he said: “The club is trying to get an operation booked so I don’t miss any games.

“With the recovery time it’s going to be a bit of a squeeze, but hopefully after surgery I can still train. I’ll just need to watch what I’m doing, and hopefully I don’t miss any games.

“They were wanting to put me in a cast for eight weeks but I said no because I didn’t want to miss any games ... it’s taken me long enough to get in the team.

“The operation is the quickest way to get back, so we’re just trying to get it booked now. It’s quite a straight-forward procedure, it just needs a wee bit help to heal quicker.”

Stewart’s goal - his third in two games - was Rovers first shot on target after what the striker conceded was a poor performance.

“We didn’t play well, especially compared to last week, but a win’s a win,” he said.

“It was a horrible game. We were poor, they missed a couple of chances, and we’ve nicked it at the end.

“You need to win those kind of games as well. It’s three points so we move on.”

Stewart paid tribute to role played by sub Rudi Skacel, who produced the pinpoint cross for his winning strike.

“It was brilliant,” he said. “Chris Johnston put in a few deliveries in the first half that I should’ve maybe anticipated a bit more.

“My movement was a wee bit better for Rudi’s cross, I got in between the two centre-halves, and it was a great delivery.

“I needed something because I hadn’t had a sniff of goal the whole game. Compared to last week it was chalk and cheese.

“You just ned to keep believing something’s going to come your way - thankfully it did and I put it away.”
