Coronavirus testing measures should be tailored to our needs, says East Fife boss

Darren Young has called for common sense to be used when it comes to coronavirus testing measures for his squad.

While Premiership clubs returned to training this week for an August return, the Bayview men are some way off.

Players at the top clubs will under-go regular testing for the virus - a procedure that looks set to be mirrored for the nation’s part-time clubs when they resume.

That’s something which doesn’t quite make sense to the Bayview gaffer.

He said: “I don’t agree with this testing twice a week where part-time teams are being treated like full-time teams.

“Of course everyone wants to be safe, but we have some players who are going into their jobs 9-5 but are only training for one and a half hours.

“I just think the rules for the part-time teams, where you’re only training on a Tuesday and a Thursday, should be different from teams training day in, day out and in contact day in, day out.

“We’re only at our facilities two nights a week.

“The standards they’re imposing on us compared to full-time teams are a bit over the top.

“I don’t want anything to happen to myself or my family, players or any of the coaching staff, but I just think there are times where they can use a bit of common sense.

“You have police, fire brigade and other jobs where people are in contact with other people and there doesn’t seem to be the same testing, so why do footballers need to be tested twice a week?”

Young reckons part-time teams should now be looking at other leagues around the world for clues on how they should return safety.

“I’d like to know how part-times do it in other countries and see the comparisons,” he said.
