Craigroyston 2-6 Thornton Hibs

In the long, colourful history of Thornton Hibs, there have been a good number of games where two players have each scored a hat-trick.

The last was 20 years ago when Daren Baillie and Terry Donaldson both netted four goals against Steelend Vics.

But are there any other clubs who can boast the fact that two men with the same Christian and surnames have achieved this feat?

At St Marks Park, Garry Thomson and Garry Thomson did just that.

It was the more junior Thomson who broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when he smacked a loose ball into the net after Newman had saved Snr’s effort.

Barely 30 seconds later, it was Jnr’s turn to set up Snr who headed home and it was 0-3 just one minute later when Jnr scored after Snr’s free-kick had deflected off Craigroyston’s defensive wall.

In the 39th minute Elliot Ford showed good persistence to get a cross in that was perfect for Snr to head the fourth.

With players and coaches currently banned from dressing rooms, half-time team-talks have to be conducted in the open air. If there had been a swear box present then the Craigroyston management team would’ve found themselves penniless.

The advice appeared to fall on deaf ears, though, because within one minute of the re-start, substitute Daniel McNab made an immediate impact by setting up Jnr to crash home number five to complete his hat-trick. Snr wasn’t to be outdone and in the 51st minute he struck a beauty from 15 yards.

That was the end of the scoring for Craig Gilbert’s team but not the home side who set about restoring a bit of pride as they went on to enjoy their best spell in the game and thoroughly deserved to reduce the deficit with goals from Gavin Pettigrew (77 mins) and Ryan Robertson (81 mins).
