Cupar Hearts made the short trip to face local rivals Kettle United last Saturday and were looking to pick up their first win of the New Year.
An excellent through ball by Richard Melville found Paul Laurie out wide and Paul Cuss just failed to connect to his well placed cross.
The home side broke the deadlock on 11 minutes when Scott Blackwood fired in Lewis Wardrope’s cross.
They almost went further ahead four minutes later through Marc Hampton but his excellent shot was expertly tipped over the bar by John Michie in the Hearts goal and the resultant corner was cleared.
Cupar Hearts were reduced to 10 men on 18 minutes when Cuss was shown a straight red for his reaction to a bad tackle.
And now the visitors had a bigger hill to climb.
The last action of the half saw a good pass by Martin Brown find Paul Laurie but the referee deemed him to be offside.
The second half saw Hearts kicking down the field and it was hoped that the better conditions would bring about better play.
A Grant Fraser cross found Iain O’Leary who tried a shot on the volley but it was just wide.
An excellent piece of individual play saw Steven Pennington win the ball and run the length of the pitch. His first shot was blocked but he collected the ball and curled his second shot wide.
Soon after an injury to Pennington forced Hearts into a substitution with Michael Reilly entering the fray and he went straight into the action.
Paul Laurie did well to win a corner but Michael Reilly’s shot was saved by Kevin Braid.
On 68 minutes Paul Laurie and Tommy Halley combined well and the latter’s shot was well saved.
Kettle were quick to break but Scott Blackwood’s shot was wide.
The home side had the ball in the back of the net moments later but the referee chopped it off for offside.
They would get their second goal though, on 93 minutes when their striker fired the ball into the back of the net.
