Davidson happy with role as Raith's Mr Reliable

After a spell in midfield, the 32-year-old utility player has been required in defence in recent weeks after injuries to both Jason Thomson and Liam Smith left Rovers without a recognised right back.

Davidson’s versatility has served him well throughout his career - he regularly swaps between centre-back and centre midfield - so while his latest position may be a new one to add to his repertoire, he has taken it all in his stride.

“Right back is one position I’ve never played before, but I suppose good players can play anywhere!” he smiled.

“It was the very first time I’d played there against Hibs so the gaffer gave me an early heads up during the week.

“The gafffer knows I’m experienced and that he can rely on me, and to be honest, the defensive side of it shouldn’t be a problem for me.

“I’ve probably shown in the the last two games that I’m not going to be a bombing right back attacking-wise, so I’ll just try to be solid, win headers and do the dirty things.

“It’s a bit of a stop-gap situation with Liam injured and Jason still a wee while away.

“There’s plenty competition for places so it will be interesting to see what happens when Liam’s back. He’s got a big future ahead of him.”

Davidson certainly played his part in the 4-2 win over Falkirk on Saturday, scoring the opener and shrugging off an early booking to mark winger Myles Hippolyte out of the game.

“I was up against a tricky winger but he got subbed,” Davidson said. “I don’t think he got much joy, so that was a positive outcome from my point of view.

“I thought it was a harsh booking but I’m experienced enough to realise I couldn’t get too tight to people because all it takes is another foul and then off you go.

“As you get older you use your head and you know not to go into silly challenges or needless ones.”

Davidson was thrilled to get on the scoresheet on Saturday for his eighth goal in his 10th season with the Kirkcaldy club.

“Goals are very rare for me, it’s obviously not my strong point but it’s always nice to score,” he said. “The ball fell to me at a set peice and I managed to get my left foot swinger on it and it was a decent finish.

“Most important was the result and we’re delighted with the outcome because over the years we’ve never really done well at Falkirk. It’s a good positive result and great team performance.”

Davidson is hoping Raith can make amends for the poorest display of the season so far when Queen of the South visit Stark’s Park this Saturday.

“Probably the worst we’ve played was the second half down there,” he admitted.

“It was very disappointing - and probably the first time we saw the heads go down.

“Queens had been flying but I thought we made it easy for them. It’s another tough game, but that’s what this league is all about.

“Our home form been decent this year so hopefully we can make that count and get another positive result and kick on.”
