Thornton Hibs 2, Brechin Vics 3

It was the numbers game at Thornton on Saturday as Brechin came from two down to take the three points against 10-man Thornton.

And player-manager Charlie King, wearing the 14 jersey, was the one man who was the difference between the teams.

Andy Adam was sent-off in the 59th minute for a challenge which the referee deemed was a bit too robust but within 60 seconds Chris Ireland put the Hibs ahead from the penalty spot after Garry Thomson was brought down by
Hugh Dickson.

Two minutes later Thomson played a cute one-two with Ireland before shooting past Jamie Robbie to put Thornton two up.

From a hotly disputed 70th minute corner-kick taken by King, the ball fell kindly for David Sturrock who lashed the ball high into the net to pull one back for the visitors.

It was all square in the 79th minute when Martin Strachan’s long punt, which came down with snow on it, rebounded back off the post to King who finished in style.

With five minutes remaining, another King corner-kick found Sean Whitworth who had walked off his marker and his header flashed into the net.

This defeat was a huge blow to the Hibs’ hopes of promotion but there’s still a lot of football to be played this season so they’ll be looking to bounce back on Saturday when Newburgh visit Memorial Park.
