Derby win keeps survival hopes alive

A Paddy Deane penalty was enough to separate the sides in what was a largely nervy encounter at Barnetts Park.

And boss Ian Barrett says the win stands the side in good stead for the end of season run in.

Barrett said: “It was a crucial win, played like a cup final, with both teams desperate for three points.

“It was great for us to get back playing at home again after a run of six away games, against some really good opposition, when we lost five of them.

“The win moves us up a place in the league and looking at the teams behind us, with the games in hand they have, it was a game we didn’t want to lose.

“I kept saying to the players that the result isn’t the be all and end all because we still have seven cup finals to go.”

Saints won’t have the chance to build on the win this weekend as they’re in Fife and Lothians Cup action.

Boness are the visitors to Barnetts Park for a game in which the manager admits he may mix things up.

He said: “We’re carrying a few knocks so it’ll give players a chance to recover.

“A cup run would be great for the club, but our aim since I joined is to stay in the Super League and that is our main focus.”
