Difficult pre-season set to help '˜Port's campaign

Tayport had held their own in the opening 45 minutes.

Dale Reid shot narrowly over from just outside the box and then the hosts opened the scoring, courtesy of a sublime chip by one of two trialists on show.

There was a chance to extend the lead after some neat play down the left flank saw Liam Ross cut back for Connaire Connelly, whose curled effort drifted wide of the target.

Thereafter, the Glens took control.

A few minutes before the break, their striker’s side-footed lob landed in the far corner of the net to draw them level.

A minute into the second half, the same player rammed home at the far post.

A clinical finish on 53 minutes, after a short back pass made it 3-1, then, two minutes later, a back-post header completed the scoring.

So, three goals had been conceded in the first ten minutes of the second half, but ‘Port stemmed the flow and the remainder of the game was played out without a great deal of incident.

After the match player-boss John Ovenstone said: “I was delighted with the work-out.

“Glenafton are one of the top teams in the west and we competed well.

“I thought we kept our shape well, especially in the first half.

“Unfortunately, we were naïve for a ten minute spell at the start of the second half.

“We need to learn how to weather that type of storm.

“Overall, I’ve been pleased with pre-season, as we’ve had some difficult games which will stand us in good stead for the league programme.

“We’re getting a good squad together and the two trialists, Daniel Sanchez and Sergio Alvarez, did really well today.

“So, all in all, there are lots of positives and I believe that the club has much to look forward to.”
