The second goal came just before the half hour when a perfectly weighted ball from Mackie sent Gary Sutherland clear and he coolly lobbed the advancing home ‘keeper.

The visitors were very much on song, with Sergio Alvarez and Daniel Sanchez pulling the strings in the middle of the park.

It was no surprise when ‘Port made it 3-0 on 35 minutes.

Spiders ‘keeper Mark Stewart dithered with the ball at his feet and was dispossessed by Jamie Mackie who had the simple task of knocking into an empty net.

After the break Sergio Alvarez scored a lovely goal with a delightfully measured shot from the edge of the box which found the postage stamp corner.

On 74 minutes, a Marc O’Leary strike from twenty yards provided Downfield with some consolation, while Andrew Ballantine fired a free kick against the upright as the hosts enjoyed their best spell of the match.

It was Tayport, however, who rounded off the scoring.

Stuart Walton flighted a deep free kick towards Alan Tulleth and Gary Sutherland and it was Sutherland who took responsibility and crashed a low shot beyond Stewart and into the back of the net.

Dale Reid hit the woodwork late on, so the rampant ‘Port had to settle for the five goals on what was a thoroughly satisfying afternoon for John Ovenstone’s side.
