Five-star Fifers stride to impressive victory

EAST Fife have dished out a couple of giant killings this season but were never in any danger of finding the shoe on the other foot.

The Methil men were utterly dominant over their Division Three guests, who were lucky to escape with only five goals conceded.

Bobby Linn almost nabbed an opener after just a couple of minutes when he found himself clear on goal, but ‘keeper Calum Antell stood up well.

From there, the Fifers simply battered Antell’s goal, with Ryan Wallace and Rob Ogleby going close.

Ogleby gave the Fifers the lead when Antell’s save rebounded off the Welshman’s face and into the net.

A second goal for the Fifers appeared a case of when, not if, and it almost came when Linn’s cross was smashed on to his own post by Steven Jackson.

Red-clad East Stirlingshire had no way of coping with the Methil side, with Darren Smith and Robert Sloan absolutely dominant in the middle of the park, and Linn and substitute Craig Johnstone causing havoc on the flanks.

The second goal was a formality, and it was Ogleby who grabbed it after running unchallenged into the box and curling past Antell.

Wallace secured the third after the re-start, when Bobby Linn cut open the ‘Shire back line and fed the front man.

The little forward, lethal so far this season, made no mistake.

This was arguably one of Linn’s best performances of the season and he managed to get the goal his play deserved when he tapped home an Ogleby cross.

Robert Sloan netted the fifth, to ensure a safe passage through to the fourth round of the Scottish Cup, when he curled his strike in off the underside of the crossbar.

Delighted Methil boss John Robertson said: “We told them to keep the tempo high and credit to them, they did that.

“On another day, we could have had double figures.

“Their ‘keeper has made four or five great saves, Rob Ogleby has gone one-on-one a couple of times and Ryan Wallace has missed a couple as well.

“We were at our best today.”
