East Fife’s under-19 squad has won “vital” sponsorship from a national, high street opticians.

Specsavers has announced that it is to team up with the New Bayview squad’s youngsters for the 2011/12 season and will have its logo on players’ kit and tracksuit.

The company has also offered a cash boost and given vital revenue to the Fifers by taking out an advertising board at New Bayview and will also feature in matchday programmes.

Brian McNeill, associate director at East Fife FC, said: “Sponsorship of our youth set-up is vital for us to continue to nurture and develop young talent.

“As a club we are dedicated to producing our own players so the under-19s are a fundamental part of East Fife Football Club.

“We really can’t thank Adrian (McCann store director) and Specsavers in Leven enough for their support.”

The East Fife under-19 squad competes in the Scottish Football League (SFL) finishing mid-table last season after an impressive run of five wins and two draws, and only one loss in their final eight matches of the football season.

The boys will also be competing in the Scottish youth Cup and League Cup in the coming season.

Several of the under-19 players have been included in first team reserve matches with others, including Ross Brewster, Kerr Newbigging and Sean Murdoch, also involved in John Robertson’s top team last season.

Mr McCann added: “We wanted to do something to support sport in our local community and sponsoring the East Fife under-19 squad was an opportunity that was too good to miss.”

In Scotland the nation’s top referees and matchday officials also have a tongue-in-cheek sponsorship deal with Specsavers.
