JOHN Robertson hit out at the normally sublime New Bayview playing surface after watching his side struggle to see off Elgin City.
The Methil boss felt the grass had been allowed to grow too long, meaning the ball was difficult to shift around and players were caught with it under their feet.
Grass worries aside, the Methil side did manage to dismiss Ross Jack’s determined side, thanks to goals from Ryan Wallace and Robert Ogleby - despite a Brian Cameron reply.
After the game, boss Robbo said: “I thought the pitch was shocking; the grass was far too long and wasn‘t good for passing.
“That didn’t suit either of us so we both huffed and puffed in the first half, making sure the other team couldn’t play to their strengths.
“But we got our two goals and then we really had to weather the storm a bit after that.
“Robert Ogleby had four or five chances and he has a lot to give.
“He’s here to learn, and it was great to see Ryan get the winner as well.”
Bobby Linn stung Zander Clark’s palms with a first-half effort and also saw a free kick drop just wide.
Cameron was unlucky at the other end and the Fifers were lucky to get away again when Craig Gunn’s cross flashed across the six-yard line with nobody on hand to convert.
The opener came when Wallace fed on-loan Hearts man Ogleby, who raced in on goal and beat Clark from close range.
Wallace got the second for the Fifers when he managed to beat Clark at the second attempt, after seeing his first strike saved.
However, fighting Elgin pulled one back when Cameron netted from close range to ensure a nervy end to the game.
Birthday boy Ryan Wallace, celebrating his 21st on Saturday, added: “I’m really enjoying playing with Robert (Ogleby) right now and I think we’re doing well together.
“We both played under the same under-19s’ coach at Hearts, Darren Murray, so we know how to play together the Hearts way and do the right things.
“The manager has brought some good players to the club, so it’s a good place to be right now.”
