Edinburgh South 2-0 St Andrews

St Andrews United and Edinburgh South met for the very first time in a competitive fixture, writes Lewis Rodger.

Saints faced a group of players determined to show that they belonged in the East of Scotland League and the home squad started strongly.

Dale O’Hara set Wayne McIntosh free with the bustling striker reaching the goal line before he slipped the ball past Fleming and under Connor Shaw into the far end of the net.

That goal seemed to give the home players a big confidence boost as early as the third minute so they worked very hard during the first half.

The United defence struggled to contain the men in red throughout the opening 20 minutes but the visitors gradually found their feet courtesy of hard graft.

Kyle Wilson tested Darren Walker in the Edinburgh South goal in the 24th minute before Jim Young made a terrific block to keep the scores level.

Walker produced a man of the match performance for Edinburgh South and he made several excellent saves towards the end of the first period.

thye keeper sent a long goal kick up the park towards Sean Jamieson and the lively striker beat the offside trap to make the score 2-0 by slipping the ball past a despairing Shaw.

United’s goalkeeper made a good block from the same forward following another neat passage of play and his defence continued to look shaky when a good cross from right to left was missed everybody in the 58th minute.

St Andrews United went on to dominate possession as the game drew to a close yet Edinburgh South still looked dangerous on the break, with McIntosh and John Ross again testing Shaw.

Wilson also made the home goalie work at the other end of the park.
