Fife Thistle put the sting into the Ammies

Fife Thistle took the plaudits for this entertaining local town derby victory in the Tom McIntyre Memorial Cup Section D tie.

Saints were left to regret an opening 15 minute period when they had their best spell but failed to capitalise on numerous chances created.

On the other hand Thistle were more clinical in front of goal with former Saints players Mark Gorgon and Roland Harrow grabbing a goal apiece with Ronnie Barnes completing the scoring.

A goal looked on the cards for Saints when Wood stepped up to unleash a 20 yard drive which Anderson spilled but Saints Anderson’s shot was deflected wide.

Thistle delivered a massive blow to Saints when they opened the scoring in 30 minutes.

A needless foul by O’Kane on Harrow gave Shepherd the opportunity to deliver a fine free kick to the back post where Gorgon ghosted in to drill home into the far corner of the net.

Thistle extended their lead three minutes before the interval when a good ball forward from Carson was flipped on by Gorgon and Harrow reacted quickly to nip in and lift the ball over Sullivan.

Saints had an early opportunity to reduce the deficit when Shields and Anderson combined to release Beech but he shot straight at the ‘keeper. Thistle were dealt a blow when Harrow was forced to be taken to hospital for stitches to an eye wound after an accidental collision with O’Kane.

Saints pulled one back when Anderson’s cross to the back post was headed powerfully into the net by Beech.

However with 10 minutes remaining Thistle made sure of the points when a Jukes corner broke to Barnes 10 yards out and he turned brilliantly to volley inside Sullivan’s left hand post.
