Frankie feels part of the family at Raith Rovers

New Raith Rovers defender Frankie Musonda says shared values were the reason he chose to sign for the club.

The 22-year-old put pen to paper for a one-year contract at Stark’s Park after 15 years at Luton Town, where he signed, aged just eight, in 2006.

He said the welcoming atmosphere in Kirkcaldy helped him to make his mind up to make the journey north.

“I’d been there for 15 years and hadn’t really played for another club until this move.

“But I spoke to the manager, then came up here to have a look around. He showed me his plans and how the team did last season.

“Even before I got to meet the boys, I had been in the Strathearn Hotel for a couple of weeks and all the people I met in Kirkcaldy have been really friendly.

“Everyone seems really nice and all the boys have been really welcoming. The manager and Paul Smith have really helped me settle in. They helped me find a place and things like that.

“It seems like it’s a club on the up and also a family club which is very similar to Luton, so it’s not too dissimilar, which is fortunate for me.

“The main foundations of the club are the values which I cherish. That is important to me.

“It feels like a good fit being here.”

The ins and outs of the Scottish Championship which await him come as no surprise to Musonda, who revealed he is follower of Scottish football.

“I think I probably know a little bit more about Scottish football than your average person back in England,” he says.

“I follow all the leagues, so I was familiar with Raith and all the other Scottish teams.

“I don’t just turn a blind eye to it because Scottish football is still pretty popular around the world, so I keep a keen eye on it.”

Musonda made 15 first team appearances for the Hatters, having played his way through the youth levels, and says although leaving the club was a wrench, he is looking forward to a new challenge.

“Obviously, I’m now in completely different surroundings but this was a good opportunity for me to get my head down and focus on my football.

“I loved my time at Luton but now I’m very much focusing on improving and learning under a different manager and it’s a good opportunity for me to make a name for myself, not being under the Luton umbrella any more.

“I was an academy graduate but now I can make my own stamp on the league up here, doing what I can for Raith.”

Now into the third week of pre-season training, Musonda says he is enjoying his time at the club and believes he has settled in well.

“It’s been a really good three weeks.

“Training has been tough, there’s been a lot of running, but it’s been good.

“Obviously, the running has to be done, but straight away on day one after we had all run, the footballs came out, which was good.

“We’ve had such a long time off. I’ve spent the last few months just training on my own, so it was great to be around my new teammates and to play football with other people.

“I’m now looking forward to the season.

“We’re definitely excited about the challenge ahead and we’re relishing the opportunity to do well in the Scottish Championship.

“We want to end the season as high up the table as possible and we’ll go into every game wanting to win.”
