Goals rain down as amateurs kick off

Despite the horrendous conditions, the Kingdom of Fife Amateur football season finally kicked off at the weekend, writes Shane Fenton.

The torrential rain however saw a number of the scheduled fixtures postponed owing to waterlogged pitches.

The goals also rained in with referees needing calcularors rather than their notebooks to keep a tally of the scores.

Of the 11 games which were played over the three divisions a total of 103 goals were scored.

Local Championship sides Markinch and Glenrothes hit the goal trail.

Kevin McVey found the net 4 times for Glenrothes in a 7-2 win over Freuchie, Steven Patterson, Adam James and Paul Phipps were also on the scoresheet for Glens. Markinch got their season off to a good start with a 6-1 victory over Fife Athletic, goals from Ryan Wilson (2), Jamie Strachan, Derry Hendry and Josh Wilson had the John Dixon Park side 5-0 up at the interval, debutant Lewis Kellock completed the scoring after the restart.

Glenrothes Strollers lost out 6-1 against Methilhill Strollers/East Fife and Hearts of Beath hit nine for no reply against Kennoway Star Hearts.
