A wet and miserable January afternoon saw old foes Cupar Hearts and Rosyth Civil Service lock horns at Duffus Park last Saturday.

The previous encounter between the sides saw the visitors pick up an impressive 3-0 victory against a Hearts team who are struggling to get back to winning ways after a run of poor results.

The visitors opened the scoring when Gary Penman’s pass found Kevin Ferguson who fired home.

Rosyth doubled their lead on 25 minutes when a harsh hand ball decision was given against Captain Scott McInroy and the referee awarded a penalty. Thomas Lambie stepped up and fired his spot kick off the post and in.

Cupar Hearts reduced the deficit on 38 minutes through a superb piece of play. Goalkeeper John Michie’s by kick was headed on by Richard Melville to Kenny Miller who flicked the ball onto Tommy Halley and he powered into the box and coolly slotted home.

Hearts had a penalty shout four minutes before the break when a foul by Dale Bouglas brought down Kenny Miller but the referee waved play on.

Robert Crawford’s well placed cross then went a begging.

Ten minutes into the second half Rosyth went further ahead when Kevin Ferguson fired the ball into the net.

At the other end a foul on Michael Reilly gave Hearts a set piece opportunity. Paul Cuss’ free kick brought out the best in visiting ‘keeper Kris Bower who managed to put the ball out for a corner.

The corner kick fell to Paul Cuss but he couldn’t keep his shot on target.

Steven Slimmings scored goal number four when he connected with a cross.

Cupar Hearts didn’t give up though, and on 79 minutes were awarded a penalty when Charles Anderson was brought down in the box.

Stephen Kinhart’s powerful kick gave the ‘keeper no chance.
