The result made it two wins on the bounce for Craig Ness’s men following last week’s Challenge Cup triumph over Lochmaben.

But it was the visitors who threatened early on at Alex Penman Park, almost taking an early lead with a shot which crept past the post after just two minutes.

However, after this Kirkcaldy started to impose themselves in midfield through Kieran Johnson and Chris Price and went close themselves to opening the scoring when a Ricki Cooper cross flew across the penalty box but Chris Ireland couldn’t quite make contact.

Two more free kicks from Cooper caused problems for the Dalkeith defence, but the visitor’s keeper showed a safe pair of hands on both occasions. However he was well beaten on 25 minutes when a volley from Ireland just flew over the bar.

But the home side were not to be denied with a quick fire double on the half hour mark.

The first was after three one-twos between Ireland and Cooper left the latter with only the keeper to beat which he did with a cool finish into the corner.

The second a minute later was even better with quick exchanges between Morgan Miller and Cooper put the former Miller through and from an acute angle he fired home into the opposite corner with an excellent strike.

After this shock the visitors tried to get back into the game before the break but without troubling keeper Robert Wilson in the home goal.

The second half started with all the early pressure from Dalkeith but the home defence were in no mood to allow any clear cut chances.

However on 53 minutes only a brilliant save from keeper Wilson stopped the visitors from getting the vital next goal, but they did get their reward for the pressure on the 70th minute, when an excellent cross caused a scramble in the box and the visitors’ substitute fired high into the net to set up a tense finish.

But Kirkcaldy held on and there was a great celebration for the home team on the final whistle after gaining their first three points of the season with a well deserved win.
