International call up for Raith Rovers defender

Rovers defender Fernandy Mendy has been called up to play in the African Nations Cup.

‘Nando’ has been selected to play for Guinea Bissau who play in the Central African Football Federation (CAF).

He qualifies to play for the country as it is where both his father and grandfather were born.

A former Portuguese territory, the Guinea Bissau national team first entered international football in 1998 and have two First Round qualification matches later this month for the 2021 African Nations tournament; away to Eswatini on Friday, March 26 and a home tie against Congo in Bissau on Tuesday, March 30.

It is Mendy’s first taste of international football and he flew out on Wednesday to meet up with his team mates.
