East Fife boss wants Methil men to push on to the next level

The curtain fell on the club’s season last week at Broadwood as hosts Clyde preserved their League One status with a 2-1 win.

It’s been a year, across the board, of twists, turns, delays and confusion, and one the majority will be keen to forget.

Despite missing out on the top five, and with it the chance to reach the end of season play-offs, the Fife manager believes there are positives to take and now wants to ensure these are built on when the new season comes around.

Young said: “It’s hard to describe last season, it was up and down and a bit of a rollercoaster ride at times.

"Just before the second lockdown we were on top of things and on a good run.

"We’d improved and were starting to play the way we could.

"There was a good Scottish Cup win as well, so it was a bit of a nightmare when it came to a halt.

"But we were happy enough and pushing for those play-offs, which is where we wanted to be.

"The disappointing thing is it was the closest we’ve come in years and then got put out on goal difference.

"We’re all frustrated and there were times we needed to be more ruthless in front of goal.”

The Fifers ended up finishing sixth in the division, behind a few full-time clubs and a couple of part-time.

With Alloa and Arbroath, both also part-time sides, playing their football in the Championship last season, just a few clubs at that level have ended higher.

And Young is keen to help East Fife muscle into that group next season.

He added: “We feel we’ve improved and progressed every year we’ve been here.

"Arbroath are up there, Alloa, Cove and Montrose as well, so we’re maybe the fourth or fifth best part-time club.

"So you have to ask, can we get better, can we get up to that top category?

"That’s one of the things we’re looking to do and to aim for.”
