East Fife will be raring to go when green light is given

East Fife boss Darren Young has no problem letting his side jump almost straight back into competitive football once he’s given the green light to do so.

Any lingering hopes that clubs below Championship level would be allowed to return on the suggested date of February 6 were dashed this week on safety grounds.

Scotland’s League One and Two clubs recently presented a blueprint to league chiefs and the governing bodies in a bid to convince them that, with improved testing introduced, they could re-start their league season soon.

Those hopes remain alive, with the postponement only extended by over a week until midnight on February 14.

That would allow clubs to train for a couple of nights ahead of a return to league action on what was scheduled to be a Scottish Cup Saturday on February 20.

The SFA says cup ties have been abandoned for that weekend, adding that it can be used as a league game for rescheduled fixtures.

Should League One be given the all clear to start training an playing again, Young believes the stacked rearranged fixture list will help bring players back up to speed in no time.

“I’d be happy to train the Tuesday and Thursday and then just get back into it,” said the manager.

"You’ll get your match fitness in games and everybody is in the same boat.

"This having to wait and having to wait, it means everybody is in the same position so we’d rather be playing games.

“Let’s get them up and running and either catch up on the games you need to catch up on or get yourselves started again until the end of the season.

"We’re already two games behind (postponed fixtures against Clyde and Dumbarton) which isn’t great.”

The January transfer window was, understandably, a much quieter time in the lower leagues this year with clubs unsure about when and if they’d be allowed to resume playing.

"We don’t want to sign players until we know we’re coming back,” added Young

"It would just cost the club more money.

"There are targets there and guys we wanted to sign.

"Innes Cameron goes and signs for Alloa and he’s a guy we’d looked at to replace Jack Hamilton. Why would he hold off when he doesn’t know when he’ll be playing?”
