It's time the penny dropped, blasts Raith captain

The 29-year-old is in the midst of his fifth full season at the club, but there’s little doubt that the team’s current plight is the toughest he’s endured since joining from Hearts.

He was forthright and honest with his thoughts after the weekend’s match, and pulled no punches about the situation which he and his teammates find themselves in,

“We were absolutely horrendous from start to finish today,” he said. “There’s absolutely nothing positive for us to take from that performance, not one thing.

“Maybe we thought we’d cracked it after Wednesday night, maybe that’s what the problem was, but evidently we hadn’t. We’re back to square one again.

“We can’t keep clean sheets, and our performance in the final third hasn’t been good enough either, and when that happens, it’s only ever going to end up one way, and it certainly has today.

“I hope this doesn’t sound disrespectful to Dumbarton, but we are utterly embarrassed to come here and lose 4-0.

“The position we’re in, they’re one of the teams that are around us that we need to be beating, and we’ve performed like that.

“The timing of the goals didn’t help matters, obviously we started the game poorly, then we came back out for the second half and the third goal has killed it off, but at the end of the day it’s just not good enough, all across the park.”

With just one win in 17 league games now, the spectre of relegation is starting to look a real possibility, something the full-back acknowledges, and is determined to help avoid.

“We really have to stick together,” he said. “We’re not going to get anywhere by getting on at each other.

“We need to demand things from each other, because at the end of the day, we’re playing for our jobs now, that’s the reality of matters.

“If the penny hasn’t already dropped, then it needs to drop now.

“I know it sounds simple, but we need to stop giving away terrible goals.

“We need to start putting away chances when they come along. That sums up the entire season basically.”

In a season which started so well, Thomson is well aware that time is running out to keep their heads above water,

“It’s back to us having to fight to save ourselves and we’ve got eight games to go and do that, but at the moment, it feels like one step forward and two steps back,” he said.

“I’ve stood here in the past, and spoke about what’s went wrong, and I’m absolutely sick of mentioning the same things, but that’s the reality of where we are, and now we’ve got eight massive games to sort it.

“We’ve got a home game against Dundee United next week which can hopefully work in our favour.

“We got a good result against St. Mirren there, so hopefully we can replicate that again next Saturday.”
