Kirkcaldy-born footballer becomes most expensive Scottish player in history

A Kirkcaldy-born footballer has become Scotland's most expensive player in history after being sold for Â£13 million.

Oliver Burke, who moved to England at a young age, completed his transfer from Nottingham Forest to German side Red Bull Leipzig yesterday.

A number of big clubs in the UK and Europe had been monitoring the 19-year-old, who will now ply his trade in the Bundesliga.

Burke joined Forest’s youth academy at the tender age of eight, before making his first team debut in September 2014.

He went on to make 25 appearances for the Championship side, scoring six times, including one in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Leeds United.

Burke made his Scotland debut in a friendly win against Denmark in March, and is included in Gordon Strachan’s squad to face Malta in the opening World Cup qualifier this weekend.

The fee surpasses the £12m Aston Villa paid Fulham for Scottish striker Ross McCormack earlier this month.
