Last Saturday saw Tayport launch a late comeback bid in a Super League encounter, but two quick-fire goals in the closing minutes ultimately proved to be too little, too late.

The Canniepairt men made a bright start to the game with Danny Cavanagh having a couple of efforts deflected wide for corners and Dale Reid seeing a shot saved.

Mussie had a couple of chances at the other end, with Gavin Sorley doing well to keep out Jackie Myles and Steven Thomson seeing a shot deflected past the post as both teams seemed intent on victory.

Tayport should have taken the lead on 33 minutes but Dale Reid could not convert Alan Tulleth’s low cross, the ball being knocked high over the bar.

Instead, the home side opened the scoring a couple of minutes before half-time when Sean Jamieson was released down the left side and he found the corner of the net with a neat finish.

‘Burgh ‘keeper Murray Jackson kept his side’s lead intact by saving from Danny Cavanagh and Alan Tulleth, just before the half-time whistle.

The next goal came on 75 minutes when Musselburgh substitute Jed Davie cracked home a volley from the edge of the area.

The Olivebankers scored again on 87 minutes, seemingly putting the points out of Tayport’s reach, courtesy of a Sean Jamieson header.

That counter, however, sparked a late ‘Port flurry.

Substitutes Scott Finlay and Matt Adam combined on 88 minutes, with Adam netting a diving header.

A minute later Kris Rollo sent Alan Tulleth through on goal and the top scorer rounded Jackson and slotted home to reduce the deficit to 3-2 and set up a grandstand finish.

Unfortunately, there would be no equaliser, as time was against John Ovenstone’s men.
