Late show seals a point for Tayport

Tayport left it late but did secure a creditable point from their McBookie.com East Premier League opening fixture against visiting Tranent.

Tranent had opened the scoring around the hour mark after a spell of pressure.

Home ‘keeper Gavin Sorley had spectacularly saved a free kick from Kevin Thomson with the visitors slamming the follow-up shot against the upright.

Then, from a corner kick, Sorley made another top class save to keep out a back-post header.

There was nothing he could do when Daniel Watt raced clear of the defence and sent a fine lob into the net.

‘Port kept plugging away until the final minute when influential substitute Scott McDowell was felled inside the box, earning a penalty kick, which Marc Ogg smashed low past Tranent ‘keeper Connor Wood.

That wasn’t quite the last incident of the match as there was still time for Ogg to receive his marching orders for his reaction to a foul.

Bos John Ovenstone wasn’t too disappointed by the outcome.

“I’m not overly pleased with the performance, but we have a new team and it will take time to gel properly so a draw isn’t a bad result considering the quality in the opposition’s ranks,” he said.

“It was a bit of a mixed bag,” said player-boss John Ovenstone.

“I felt we controlled the first half, but didn’t capitalise.

“Tranent had more of the play after the break, but we showed character to come back from going a goal down and didn’t give up.”

The Canniepairt gaffer was also pleased with the impact of his substitutes, with Alan Tulleth and Scott McDowell in particular making their presence felt when they entered the fray after Tranent’s opening goal.
