League hiatus comes at a bad time again for the Fifers

The enforced lay-off from competitive football due to a rise in Covid-19 rates in Scotland has again hit East Fife at the worst possible time, says boss Darren Young.

When the season was closed down in spring last year, the Methil men were in a battle to reach the end-of-season promotion play-offs.

This time round, the break until the start of February, at the earliest, has come just when the side was starting to hit a nice bit of form.

While the reasons for the respective shutdowns were obvious in the greater scheme of things, in a footballing context it sees the Fifers out of luck again.

“It’s not ideal and it’s probably similar to last season when you’re heading to the play-offs with eight games to go and have a good points total, but everybody is in the same position so we’re getting on with it,” said Young.

“We’re delighted with how we did against Tranent in the cup and how we’ve been doing in the league.

“It’s unfortunate that it’s happened again, but it’s more about the health and safety of everyone and getting through the pandemic.

“The boys were fit at the start of the season and it now gives other guys who have had a couple of niggles the chance to get their fitness up.

“Ideally we’d love to be playing but just have to go with what we’ve been told.”

East Fife, like all other clubs below the Scottish Championship, remain out of action until Saturday, February 6, when they are scheduled to travel to Montrose.

They’re currently in sixth place in League One, with 13 points from nine games.

That’s three places below third-placed Montrose and five points short of their prospective hosts’ tally of 18 from 11 games.

The Fifers will go into that game on the back of some positive recent results having beaten Forfar Athletic, Falkirk and Tranent Juniors in their previous games.
