Methilhill Strollers 1-2 Pittenweem Rovers
In one of the few fixtures to survive the wet weather, Rovers made their way to Methilhill to take on The Strollers in a Tom McIntyre League Cup Section B fixture.
They emerged with the points to keep them at the top of the group.
Rovers started strongly, with some good early pressure and that paid of in the eigth minute when Ryan Wilson floated a cross into the box from left midfield and Neale Smith rose above the defence to nod the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net to put the visitors one up.
Allan had a good chance to extend Pittenweem’s lead a few minutes later when he was through on goal but he steered his effort wide of the target. Craig Cameron was next to try his luck but his driven effort was blocked and McCarroll’s shot from the rebound was too high to trouble the Strollers keeper.
Methilhill got a chance to get back in the game when they were awarded a penalty in the 35th minute.
Strollers were through on goal and as Barclay raced off his line the striker got his shot away and the ball deflected off the Rovers keeper’s leg to safety but Barclay’s momentum took him into the Strollers forward, bringing him down, just inside the box.
Barclay retreated to his line for the spot kick and pulled off a brilliant save.
Rovers eventually extended their lead when Strollers attempts to head to safety could only find the top corner of their own net and give Rovers a 0-2 cushion going into the final stages.
Rovers did well to contain the home side, largely down to some industrious performances from Ketchen, Smith, Bowman and Guild in a treacherous midfield.
The home side did pull a goal back with 13 minutes remaining, however, when Rovers squandered several opportunities to clear the danger, allowing Methilhill to get a shot away from the edge of the box that looped over Barclay and into the net to make the score 1-2.
Saturday, March 11 sees Rovers on the road again as they travel to play AM Soccer in the Tom McIntyre Cup.
