Murray says it's time for a new era at Barnetts Park

Mr Murray is a former chairman of East Fife FC and has joined Barnetts Park in the same role this week.

Whilst at the Bayview club, he was credited for his forward thinking, introducing crowd funding ideas and other exciting off the field developments.

His departure came as a surprise a couple of seasons back, with the businessman claiming others involved with the club at that time didn’t share his vision for it.

He didn’t leave the game for long, instead getting involved with Levenmouth amateur club Leven United. Their recent campaign couldn’t have gone better, winning the Kingdom Caledonian League and reaching the final of the Scottish Amateur Cup.

Now Mr Murray says he’s ready for a fresh challenge - and that’s helping make Saints one of the most formidable forces in the junior game.

He said: “I feel there is a real opportunity to grow the club, team and brand and establish the club as one of the main junior clubs in Fife in the next couple of years.

“I wouldn’t have left Leven to be involved with another club unless I was leading the organisation.

“I’ve had a chance to take stock and thoroughly enjoyed my time with Leven but I feel I can still achieve more in football and you need to work at the highest level possible and work where there is real potential and opportunity and I feel St Andrews has that.”

St Andrews is a town world renowned for sport but it’s not flying too high to suggest that sport isn’t football.

The Home of Golf will always be synonymous for its putting greens rather than its penalty boxes, but Mr Murray still feels there is untapped potential in its junior side.

“It’s never going to be the number one sport in the town,” he admitted.

“But there is a big supporter base in and around St Andrews and if we can give people what they want which is hopefully a well run club, playing exciting football and challenging for leagues and trophies then I along with everyone working for the club can lead the Saints into a new era.”
