Newburgh 11-0 Eyemouth

Eyemouth had sat in abeyance last season and manager Kevan Wright is under no illusions of the task facing him pulling together a squad from scratch.

Newburgh gave a start to two trialists, a forward Evan Stanfield and a defender Kerr Brown. Newburgh were without Aidan Edwards due to suspension and several more of the squad who had picked up knocks.

The visitors started the game in a positive fashion and could have scored from their first attack with the ball just clearing that bar.

Newburgh took control of the game and opened their account from the penalty spot in the 7th minute. Scott Sutherland, who had been upended in the box to earn the penalty, converted coolly from the spot.

Sutherland doubled his and Newburgh’s tally in the 13th minute rounding the keeper to slot the ball away.

Next to score for Newburgh was trialist Evan Stanfield who turned in a cross from the left in the 1th minute.

Stanfield made a dream start from himself and Newburgh even better slotting home a through ball from 18 yards as the visitors’ defence struggled to keep close him down.

Eyemouth swapped formation and settled their defence to cope with the onslaught that Newburgh were now throwing at them. Credit to the young team they managed to stem the tide and played some nice football without ever really being able to threaten Calum Sutherland in the Burgh goal.

The second half started badly for Eyemouth with a poor back pass being snatched by Stanfield who made no mistake for his hat trick and Newburgh’s fifth goal in the 47th minute.

Jamie Gay got on the score sheet in the 57th minute when a sublime free kick curled around the wall and beat the keeper in the bottom corner of his goal.

Not to be outdone Scott Sutherland grabbed his hat trick and Newburgh’s seventh goal of the game in the 67th minute after some great work on the left by Scarborough.

Stanfield upped the stakes two minutes later chipping the Eyemouth keeper from the 18-yard line to take his tally to four goals.

Scott Sutherland added three more to his tally for the day on the 76th, 86th and 89th minutes to secure his double hat trick giving Newburgh an 11–0 win.

Newburgh manager Scott Hudson was pleased with the points and performance.

He said: “We didn’t know what to expect having never played Eyemouth before.

“They have suffered a couple of early season defeats but we had to prepare as normal. I spoke to the squad and said we needed to maintain the level of our performance from last Saturday’s win at Burntisland and they certainly did that. I would commend Eyemouth for sticking with it right to the end, they kept playing football and maintained their discipline right to the end.”

Newburgh visit Lochgelly Albert on Saturday with a slightly earlier kick off time on 2pm.
