The 37-year-old wore the captain’s armband in the absence of the injured Kyle Benedictus against Morton on Saturday and led by example by scoring the winning goal – his first since January 2019.

‘Davo’ says that with his season so far having been blighted with injury and illness he understands that his appearances may be limited.

"Coming back during the week against Dunfermline was a tough one,” he says, “getting chucked back into the deep end after a few months out then I was one of the ones that was hit by the Covid outbreak

“I was probably a bit off the pace against Dunfermline but you can't beat match fitness. It takes a couple of games to get going so against Morton I tried to use my experience.

“Hopefully I can stay in the team now but at my age I'm happy to be a bit part player because we've got a strong squad.”

After a performance and scoreline to forget against the Pars, Rovers changed their preferred shape in Greenock and Davidson says he was delighted with the way the team adapted.

"We usually play a 4-2-3-1, that's the gaffer's favoured formation. He likes to be expensive and he's implemented that from day one since he came back to Raith.

“It's great and enjoyable to play in but during the week against Dunfermline we were far too open in the second half.

"We were more solid against Morton and it was nice to mix it up and be more compact and at the end of the day we got the three points and a clean sheet.

"It was great to get a goal too. I don't get them too often!

Raith now welcome Ayr United to Stark’s Park this weekend and Davidson says he expects a tough match.

“Ayr are another team who will have aspirations of getting in to a play-off position. Mark Kerr’s doing a fine job there.

“They're all tight games. You usually see a lot of draws in the Championship.

“It'll be a tough game but we will enjoy it at home.

"We've got a good surface and we like to play football so on the day we will try our best to win the game.”
