Raith player struck by coin thrown from crowd

Ross Matthews was left clutching his head after being hit by the object, thrown from the McDermid Stand containing the away support, near the end of the match.

The 21-year-old midfielder was fortunate to escape with only a minor injury, with club chief executive Eric Drysdale claiming the consequences could have been far worse.

Raith have been reviewing CCTV footage, however, it has emerged that pictures taken by club photographer Walter Neilson captured the ugly incident as it unfolded.

Mr Drysdale told the Press: "We have clear photographs of the alleged perpetrator in action and we are liaising with Dundee United and Police Scotland with a view to identifying the person.

"Clearly any object thrown into a group of players is highly dangerous.

"The object did hit Ross on the head about an inch from his eye, and has caused swelling, but had he been less fortunate then it could well have caused him a serious problem.

"I condemn unreservedly anybody that even considers throwing something from the stands onto the pitch.

"This incident came when a number of players were in the goalmouth. It could have just as easily struck a Dundee United player.

"It is a totally reckless act and we hope the person responsible is quickly brought to justice."
